Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Celebrate the life and works of Dr. King all weekend. UA offers a free concert at Centennial Hall on Sunday, featuring performances by the university’s School of Theatre, School of Dance, Poetry Center, and the MLK Choir from Southwest Soul Circuit. Sponsored by the College of Humanities’ Department of Africana Studies, the afternoon performances are the perfect way to commemorate MLK Jr. Day.

The city’s annual MLK Holiday Celebration starts with a Freedom March to Reid Park on Monday at 8:00 a.m. It begins on MLK Way at Biotech Park. You’ll want to arrive early to find a great spot on the route. The celebration continues in the park until 3 p.m. with entertainment, vendors, food and surprises.

In the Spirit of Justice

The National Parks offer free entrance to all parks in the system around the country on Monday, and you’ll want to take advantage of this incredible offer. Starting your Saturday, Sunday, and/or Monday morning with a meditative hike is in keeping with Dr. King’s teachings. Plus, early morning hours are less crowded and cool, while providing a healthy start to your day.

On Monday, the Tucson Botanical Gardens offers a Family Fun Day with special events designed for children. The additional experience is included with your admission at the award-winning garden. Cost is $13 for adults and $7.50 for children (those ages 3 and under are admitted free).

How do you plan to celebrate?
